Almost nine years after announcing himself as the lead vocalist of MONSTA X, Kihyun comes back to be the hero of his own tale once again with the seven-track solo album BORDERLINE, released by Starship Entertainment on 7th July, 2026. Following a gap of almost four years after his last solo album, YOUTH, this EP marks a new era in the life of the singer not because of its attempts to reinvent him, but because of what it tells us about his growth as an individual. Now that the artist has crossed his thirties having spent well over a decade in the music industry, Kihyun explores confidence, doubts, and bravery through BORDERLINE.

EP is his third solo album after VOYAGER and YOUTH, but still, he remains one of the greatest vocalists of the MONSTA X group which was formed in 2015. The album consists of seven songs that show the vocal style, which has been developing for many years and which at the same time evolves and transforms into something more extensive thanks to the influence of various music styles such as pop rock, alternative rock, R&B, band music, and even jazz. The album is headed by the title song “So Good” and there are no attempts to catch any trend in the music and do not create an explosive vocal performance that is typical for Kihyun.

The main concept of the BORDERLINE is crossing one's border. According to Kihyun, the BORDERLINE is the representation of who he is at the age of thirty years old. In contrast to VOYAGER which is about starting out on a journey and YOUTH about being young and its feelings and memories, BORDERLINE is about the phase between having achieved something and the unknown things. It is about a symbolic line which needs to be crossed, not because some people are demanding that, but because a person wants to move on his or her way because of personal beliefs.

It was particularly true when creating "So Good". The song almost did not become a title song as there was another song chosen at first for that purpose. But Kihyun kept feeling like something is still missing. Having come to the deadline of the album, he finally believed in his instinct and chose the song which would represent the main message of the album. It became not only an issue of producing. It became the basis of BORDERLINE: personal conviction can exist even in the case when there are ready answers.

The music itself, “So Good” embodies this attitude in a rock-inspired piece that requires a great deal of control rather than vocal strength. While it is true that the singer is famous for singing high tones in impressive ways, “So Good” asks for something else – from soft parts, to melody and even explosive parts, the vocal part requires some other approach to the song that adds the element of interpretation rather than vocal range, which depends on the emotional state of a person trying to trust himself.

It should be noted that Kihyun’s choice of the song is the reflection of a certain artistic goal. Throughout the whole process of creating this album, BORDERLINE, Kihyun was saying that he does not want to sing only familiar songs that would repeat his usual style. Choosing those songs which would require him to do things differently, he tried to interpret the songs in the way that he wanted, and this EP turned out to be one of the most sincere albums.

Such search for expansion may be traced in the structure of the album. It starts with the first track “Borderline”, which immediately creates the ambience of the whole project by means of electric guitars, drums, and a rock base, thus giving rise to the theme of change and transition. “So Good” is another song that represents the emotional core of the album, giving it the form of a personal statement. “Stealin’ Air” moves to a smoother R&B sound, which requires special control and interpretation skills. Kihyun noted that it is one of the most difficult tracks to record owing to its shifting vocal performance, which includes even rhythmic performance of some parts of the song. In contrast to his usual one-and-a-half hour long recording process, Kihyun needed much more time to finish this track.

In addition, the rest of the songs extend this emotional palette as well. “Domino” serves to continue with the album’s modern band feel, while “Lazy Day” adds a sense of gentleness and ease. “Late Night Drive” takes the pace down even more with an intimate R&B vibe, allowing room for Kihyun to showcase his warm vocal colors. Meanwhile, the final song “Howling” brings back the feeling of a harder alternative pop rock, bringing this project to its conclusion.

However, one of the main advantages of BORDERLINE is the ability of this work to use Kihyun’s voice not only technically but also as a storytelling device. It is known that his fame is built on strength, stability and impressive vocal technique, however, in this case, the project gives equal value to nuance. Here Kihyun is allowed to explore his low registers, gentle sound, controlled falsetto, and reined emotion. The point is not just showing off one's ability to sing, but the reason for doing so.

The artistic approach used in the production of BORDERLINE is also notable in its active involvement of Kihyun in a way that goes beyond mere participation. Despite not listing his name in the production credits, Kihyun claims that his part in the making of the album entailed directing the general direction of the production and making decisions based on which would serve him most appropriately. In essence, he did not add any components into the album simply because he wanted to be involved in the process; instead, he created the album in a manner that would be the best representation of himself.

The visual concept of BORDERLINE is a continuation of the themes of movement and self-discovery through the use of concepts associated with airports, boarding, travel documents, suitcases and maps. With the help of Starship Entertainment, the artist promotes the EP as the path towards the destination which isn't predetermined yet. With the help of various visual concepts (THE 3rd JOURNEY, ROUTE, and MAP BUILDING), the artist is depicted as a person who is exploring the unknown and making his own path.

Through the music video of “So Good”, the theme of movement is represented through a depiction of the artist in an environment that is broken and chaotic, yet he keeps moving on without being aware of the destination. It symbolizes the fact that Kihyun is trying to have confidence in a world that tries to tell him how he should succeed and be happy.

In terms of Kihyun's career, BORDERLINE comes at a significant point for him. Since his time spent in the military and after many years of consistent work with MONSTA X, he describes a transition in the way he interacts with music. In the early part of his career, any musical work was usually associated with stress and obligations. Over time and gaining experience, he began to see performing as an opportunity for freedom, rather than stress. This makes most of the EPs' emotions resonate.

With respect to the overall K-pop genre, BORDERLINE becomes one of the movements within the industry by artists who have already made a name for themselves through solo albums where they experiment with their identities outside of their groups. Kihyun does not ignore his past in MONSTA X. On the contrary, he uses all of his experience with the group, touring, concerts and studio recording in order to create something personal.

In this case, it is possible that the project will split the listeners' expectations for a fundamental change. BORDERLINE is neither about total reinvention nor shock music. It does not work on these levels. Instead, the project offers consistency, ambition, and honesty. Kihyun makes his choice of refinement over innovation and highlights his greatest strength along with its other dimensions.

It turns out that the main idea of the BORDERLINE project is to cross the line that is known only to the artist himself. This is the album created by an artist, who is recognized already but still wants to find his authenticity. The project is made through the rock-style arrangements, storytelling, and self-confidence of Kihyun.

BORDERLINE does not tell about a totally new Kihyun that would be found by listeners. On the contrary, it offers to recognize the person that was singing MONSTA X songs for the last ten years. It shows the portrait of the artist that moves forward without knowing all the answers since he learned how to trust his own decisions.
