How Taemin made Hyde Park feel smaller

Taemin’s been around so long that saying he’s “precise” or “controlled” almost feels like stating the obvious at this point. You kind of already know what you’re going to get… or at least you think you know. Because with Taemin, the odd thing is, that still doesn’t prepare you for how it actually feels in front of you. On stage it’s not just “he’s good”, it’s more like… he just has everyone exactly where he wants them without ever making it obvious that’s what he’s doing. Seeing him at BST Hyde Park on Sunday 28 June 2026 felt like that in real life. He didn’t really try to match the whole “festival headliner energy” thing. He just showed up as himself and the stage simply adjusted to him instead. 

He came on without any delay and went straight into Sexy In The Air, then WANT. No build-up that felt designed for a big entrance. WANT still has that slightly unreal quality live where it looks smooth from far away, but you can tell up close it’s extremely controlled. Not flashy control either, just very locked in.

Before continuing with his setlist, he stopped and greeted his fans. “What’s up, London? How are you today?” mentioning at the same time how happy he was being back in one of his favourite cities and the honour he felt by being invited to perform at BST Hyde Park. Even after nearly two decades in the industry, he still comes across as genuinely grateful for moments like this.

PERMISSION didn’t stand out in a loud way, but it neither needed to. “Don’t need no permission… I’m gonna do what I want when I wanna’’ That - more like a statement - hook just kind of hangs in the air outdoors. It’s simple, and maybe that’s why it works in a festival setting without trying to become bigger than it is.

Criminal tightened everything immediately. You could feel the mood shift almost immediately, even out in the audience. It has been about six years since its release, and still remains one of the most impressive acts on stage. And then MOVE does what it always does, which is slightly strange every time: the atmosphere just changes without warning. People don’t “build into it,” they just lock in from the very first second like something clicked.

I'll admit it... Guilty was probably the song I was waiting for most. It doesn’t push for attention, which makes it harder to describe in a way. You only really realise how absorbed you are once it’s already been going for a while.

Later on, Advice and Let Me Be The One switched the vibe again. Advice brought the intensity back up, then Let Me Be The One kind of loosened everything for a bit. Like a nice breather moment before the end. 

He closed with 1004. It still isn't officially released, but judging by the reaction, that hardly mattered. The response came immediately anyway, almost instinctively. It just carried. Nothing framed around it, no build-up to “final song energy,” it just ended up being the last thing he did.

And that was kind of the impression overall. Taemin has almost two decades proving that he definitely is one of the greatest artists of his generation, and the nickname Idols’ Idol is not unfairly bestowed. He didn’t need to adapt to the festival, and he didn’t really acknowledge the idea he had to. He just stayed in his own timing the whole way through.
