Chute Libre: KarlA’s intimate rewriting of emotion, language, and self

Through “Chute Libre”, KarlA is not only presenting a song but making us conscious of a crack, a personal experience lived, thought about, and expressed without the need for any filters or artificiality. In KarlA’s universe, music is not the result of an imaginative process or fiction. Music is the natural consequence of life. Starting from 2023, each of KarlA’s songs has been composed in the very midst of the life she lived when writing them. It is not that she creates a song after a period of time and with some distance from her experiences, but that she makes use of them right in the very moment in which they happen. It is because of that that her discography shows a remarkable coherence as a sort of personal musical diary.

But "Chute Libre" represents an even deeper break. After a long process of introspection, KarlA finally made up her mind to stop writing and singing in English and switch to French. This is more than just switching languages. As KarlA says, using English gave her the opportunity to remain detached from her experiences unconsciously; it was a sort of shield separating her from her memories. On the other hand, when she writes in French, there is no escaping language; it is an experience to be embraced in all its emotions. Through translating her songs into her native language, KarlA does not merely adapt them; rather, she enhances them, making them closer, more personal, and much harder to cope with.

“Chute Libre” can thus be seen as a reinvention of the previous song, “Let Me Fall”. The instrumental has been heavily remodeled to match the inner workings of this transition, but what really makes the difference here is the lyrics. While the English version leaves room for subtlety, the French version brings an added element of candor. Each word seems to have been picked not only for its poetic value, but for its ability to convey an exact emotion. KarlA believes that the best writing comes from a place of simplicity, approaching the written form the same way she approaches her speech : directly and honestly.

Such straightforwardness becomes an advantage. It means that listeners have the chance to fully immerse themselves in the story and identify with it without having to struggle with anything. The core of “Chute Libre” is a feeling experienced by many people that most people are unable to put into words: the realization that something is wrong in either a relationship, an atmosphere or interaction with another person, but one decides to stick around regardless. It happens because of some kind of affection, fear or expectation.

KarlA does not exaggerate or fantasize about this experience; she simply observes it. It is in this exact lack of imagination that “Chute Libre” gains its power. This track is not trying to convince the listeners of anything or make them believe in something. It just says what needs to be said.

For her, songwriting provides great healing. Being able to describe what happened through words makes it easier for her to organize thoughts, to make sense of experiences, and even to survive them. Yet beyond her own needs, she has a greater dream of using her music to help other people. Of making it a catalyst, an echo chamber, or an epiphany. This artist envisions people listening to “Chute Libre” and realizing that there’s something wrong with their life. This realization may be unpleasant, but it can also be the beginning of a journey towards change.

Indeed, her dedication to integrity is evident throughout all of her pieces. Even though she may refer to outside sources as in “Delusion,” which she created based on a scene from the series How I Met Your Mother fused with her personal experience, there is always an attempt to relate everything back to the common humanity. She is certainly not trying to be unique. In fact, she argues that the very reason why people can relate to her work is because of the ordinariness of her experiences. If somebody ever told her that she was able to express their experience through her poems that they would not have been able to, she would be more than honored by such a comment.

As far as music goes, KarlA sticks to pop, which she feels allows for the conveyance of emotion directly. The range of influences that affect her is broad and eclectic, encompassing all the music she hears, but nothing comes close to the purpose of creating an emotional response in the listener through lyrical expression.

2026 is a decisive stage. "Chute Libre" is merely the beginning of a series of six songs, all revolving around a specific idea: a reissue of songs already put out in French, but ordered chronologically according to the events which triggered their creation. It creates a certain sense of coherence in this project. They are no longer standalone compositions, but episodes in one long tale. The listener will be able to take note of a progression, of a journey he is invited to follow. The process of listening thus becomes a sequential one, as if each composition were the introduction to the following one.

But behind all this comes a time of introspection. As KarlA mentions, the beginning of the year was the time when she experienced deep self-reflection and self-questioning; a vulnerable time when she had to think about the way she went about her business, about the choices that she made, and about herself. A complicated time, when she found herself in a depressive condition, familiar to many creative individuals. However, despite being difficult, this time was productive, as it helped her to sort everything out, figure out her goals, and accept the idea of starting a new life.

Nowadays, she openly admits that there will be a new stage in her career, not replacing anything, but adding up to everything she already has. Even though she is working hard on the release of these singles, she is doing even more work on something else – developing new projects, which are still not seen but are definitely going somewhere. And 2026 becomes the year of construction.

Here, however, the number of audience members she has becomes less significant than the level of their relationship with her. The people who really understand what she does and devote some of their attention, reacting to what she has written, giving feedback, sending KarlA messages of appreciation mean more to her than others who might only pay lip service to her music. And, although it might be a minor thing to others, for KarlA, these moments carry an emotional charge.

In the end, her whole body of work seems to revolve around one challenging concept: telling the truth as it is, no matter how harsh or uncomfortable. “Chute Libre” does not offer any closure or solutions.

It occurs in a specific emotional time – the time between realization and action. Perhaps that is where the strength of the song comes from – that moment between understanding and inertia when many people see themselves reflected in it but are afraid to acknowledge it.

If 2026 is the start of a new chapter in KarlA’s life, then the only thing she knows for sure is that music is a place of honesty. A place where one finally finds the courage to say what they feel. Sometimes, this is enough to change everything.
