OURBIRTHDAY’s Our Birthday: A debut built to define what comes next
Just three days into their official introduction to the world, OURBIRTHDAY’s Our Birthday appears to have less of a debut quality and more of a highly organized introduction of an act that wants to define itself before any of the hype around the coming of a girl group associated with JYP Entertainment takes off. Coming out on August 19, 2026, at 6 PM KST, Our Birthday is a four track debut mini album, which represents the first official act from a seven member group that INNIT Entertainment, a subsidiary of JYP Entertainment, has launched.
Our Birthday consists of Jo Hye-jin, U, Bebi, aka Baby, Achiraya, Guk Cho-rok, Kirara, and Shin Hye-won. Both Yonhap News Agency and Hankook Ilbo confirm the seven member line-up in reporting about the debut showcase of the act that took place in Seoul. The group members’ backgrounds present a rather diverse background of their members: Jo Hye-jin has been a winner of The DDanddara while Shin Hye-won was a participant of R U Next?. Nevertheless, OURBIRTHDAY doesn’t revolve around the story of just one breakthrough star.
INNIT has dubbed that idea: “WHIP-HOP”. As an intersection of the energy of hip-hop and the free-spirited nature of the seven individuals that make up the group, WHIP-HOP is more a label that defines the vocabulary needed rather than creating a new genre of music. As Shin Hye-won put it, WHIP-HOP was invented for the purpose of allowing for all the differences to be united together, as well as letting people know that the group has no intention of staying within those limitations. That is very significant.
For example, the name “Our Birthday” is a creation that has a signature of its own, but one that does not think itself as finished. The title track “SQUEEZY” is the perfect example of how the idea of INNIT works. According to the description, it is a funky dance song with an addicting melody, where emotional pressures are represented by the physical act of squeezing a squishy toy to let the feelings and stresses escape through it.
Similarly, in terms of its musical content, the track is also guided by an instinctual approach. Its hook is catchy; its form is brief; and its 2 minute 30 second runtime allows no digressions. This track does not seek to demonstrate how complicated it is. It simply seeks to be memorable, performable, and physical. At the showcase, the members identified it as a good example of their WHIP-HOP identity, with Guk Cho-rok pointing out the contrast between the softness and kitschiness of the melody and the much more intense stage performance. The clash between the sweet and the hard-hitting is one of the most appealing notions of the track.
In fact, it is here that the album discloses its main weakness. SQUEEZY is incredibly transparent about its intentions; however, transparency and complexity are not identical phenomena. Repetition makes the track memorable immediately; however, it can also appear rather static when compared to other songs seeking to develop further musically. In terms of its production, the song chooses the hook and the performance over the musical surprise. However, this approach is not forced on the track from the outside; it is the very essence of its composition.
Our Birthday, on the other hand, has a different function. This is a 2 minute and 37 second long first track that turns the band's name into a musical idea. INNIT sees a birthday not only as an anniversary but also as a happy time when one feels free and can just be oneself. The goal of the group is for regular everyday moments with its fans to turn into celebration of those moments. In this way, the song becomes an intention declaration of the type of emotional space that the music is about to create.
The production here opens up the spectrum without losing the electronic essence of the project. IMLAY is responsible for programming, synthesizers, sound effects, and bass, while C’SA and OURBIRTHDAY have chorus vocals. The list of credits also includes recording at JYPE Studios, mixing by Lee Tae-seop, and mastering by Kwon Nam-woo. None of these individually can claim a revolutionary production approach, but all of these together emphasize the electronic basis of the celebration idea.
There is also “HUNGRY”, the inclusion of which provides the biggest link to the pre-debut history of the group. Side A debuted Jo Hye-jin, Baby, and Achiraya, while Side B debuted Guk Cho-rok, Shin Hye-won, U, and Kirara. Both Sides were produced by the same songwriting and arrangement team composed of Jake K, Sean Fischer, Kyler Niko, and Lucia Calcines, with Jake K and Sean Fischer responsible for arrangement as well. In this case, the metaphor is that of hunger for the stage and is conveyed in an explosive and performance-driven way.
Such separation worked quite effectively before debut since the group could reveal their seven members in two different units before their joint debut. But at the Seoul showcase, “HUNGRY” was performed by all seven of them, as Side A transitioned into Side B before the members united. The arrangement works in terms of making the track relevant in terms of the history of the group, although it does not offer any new things in terms of music.
That is bound to cause a dilemma in the tracklist. For those who were following the pre-debut campaign, the two versions of HUNGRY create the sense of continuity and the formation of the final seven members is justified. For those listening to the song without any background information, however, this will be just another limitation of the project’s sonic diversity. With only four songs lasting for 9 minutes and 41 seconds, Our Birthday gives a brief overview but not a complete survey of their skills.
As far as the visual side of the project is concerned, it is more elaborate. INNIT created an entire universe which is connected with birthdays, cake, clock, calendar, bright colors, game-like sound effects, and the idea that every day should be as exciting as a birthday. The animated series WHIP! OURBIRTHDAY! introduces such characters as CHERYSHA, GROOVLU, I-YAT, and the villain MUMI. Thus, the project is much bigger than a simple music video – it features not only characters and animation but also performance content.
The campaign also understands when it needs to adjust its temperature. HUNGRY plays with the idea of movement and physical strength, through the visual of white particles spreading as the members dance. SQUEEZY is more whimsical and unpredictable, with teaser visuals introducing chef Fabrizio Ferrari. The visual decisions match the contradiction present in the song: the visuals paint a picture of a sweet and even kitschy world that nevertheless moves with a certain amount of assurance and physicality.
However, there is a broader context of industrial history to which the single cannot elude. OURBIRTHDAY is the first new girl group from JYP Entertainment since NMIXX was formed in 2022, and the first girl group to be formed via INNIT Entertainment. The legacy of these groups is powerful, with Wonder Girls, miss A, TWICE, ITZY, and NMIXX all setting the bar for JYP’s female groups. While the members recognize the pressure, Achiraya has positioned it as an incentive to show why OURBIRTHDAY is unique. This sentiment has also been echoed by Guk Cho-rok.
That difference might turn out to be more important than whatever comparison comes immediately to mind. Our Birthday does not change the world of K-pop, and there are no reasons to assume it does. “WHIP-HOP” has not become a music trend, neither did it make an attempt to redefine funk, hip-hop, or dance pop. Nevertheless, what it does for OURBIRTHDAY is more humble but also more useful in terms of debuting group: it provides OURBIRTHDAY with the language needed to join the already existing market.
The positioning strategy of the group itself is equally well thought-out. The way it debuted started from logo animation and building up the character, moved on to the pre-debut shows of the members as a group and ended with the official seven members’ debut performance. It is a result of contemporary knowledge about the group in K-pop industry: it is not just songs that one experiences when listening to it, but also choreography, storytelling, personalities, social media content, and performances.
What is still left in doubt is also that which makes this debut interesting. As Shin Hye-won made it clear, WHIP-HOP is supposed to be just an experiment which the group may try before moving into different music styles.
For now, Our Birthday succeeds in its understanding of what a debut means. It does not pretend to tell the whole story about OURBIRTHDAY. All it does is introducing the main characters, creating the atmosphere, and providing the audience with the vocabulary which will be needed in the future. “Our Birthday” sings about the beginning of something new. “SQUEEZY” transforms pressure into fun. “HUNGRY” brings ambition to life. And all of this makes us see the group that is confident in the fact that seven distinctive personalities may be in the same frame and not merge with each other.
That is not a revolution. This is something better suited to a debut single: an opening that carries a face. And once the din of a big splash opening fades away, that is probably what Our Birthday will have contributed to posterity. Not the illusion that OURBIRTHDAY has become all that it can possibly be, but rather the more tantalizing prospect that it has now given itself a place from which to start.
