NEXZ’s “Mmchk” focuses on precision over reinvention

In an industry where speed is synonymous with innovation, the progression of NEXZ, up to this point, has followed its own rigorous path. Born out of the cross-border survival show “Nizi Project Season 2”, a partnership between JYP Entertainment and Sony Music Japan, the seven-member boy group found themselves stepping into the crowded field of K pop culture, characterized by rapid growth and success. However, with the recent launch of their second single album “Mmchk” on April 27, 2026, at 6 p.m. KST, approximately half a year since their debut album “Beat-Boxer”, the choice was made to evolve rather than disrupt.
"Mmchk" does not come as a shocking change but as a conscious move. This is particularly important at the beginning of a career in K-pop. While the entertainment industry favors shock and impact, lasting success is achieved through clarity, which here translates into the act of performance itself being a message.
The entire album is very brief, containing just three songs, namely the title track "Mmchk", the B-side "Hypeman", and the English rendition of the lead single. Such brevity can be seen as part of a more extensive strategy. Instead of splashing around in different styles, the NEXZ band condenses its art language within a tight format.
The purpose of this project hinges on the notion which can be found in its very title. According to the group members, the word "Mmchk" is a rhythmical utterance which suggests movement. It should not be considered a figure of speech in any traditional understanding. In the context of this architectural structure, sound and movement cannot be dissociated from one another. The music is not just an accompaniment to the dance; it creates the dance.
The philosophy comes out clearly in the production style as well. As the officially provided material does not categorize the sound of “Mmchk”, rhythm as the driving force behind its construction can be seen clearly. Percussion forms an integral part of the production style, not as decoration, but as structure. The songs have been produced in such a way that they work best on stage. The focus is on precision rather than melody.
The use of such a methodology naturally impacts the use of the voice. Voices within "Mmchk" do not serve as tools for expressing one’s own identity in the classic pop music tradition. Rather, they exist in a collectivist framework, being used in order to blend into the rhythm seamlessly. The band uses different voices but makes sure that they complement one another, focusing instead on synchronization.

But this does not imply that no growth occurs. Relative to their early days, the performances tied to “Mmchk”, especially the ones shown at the comeback stage in Seoul, point to a clear increase in confidence and mastery. The group shows increased sureness when it comes to timing and space, both crucial for performance-based identity. Their development does not lie in metamorphosis; rather, it lies in consolidation. In a setting where one must maintain a sense of self amid stress, consolidation becomes an accomplishment in its own right.
This balance can be seen in the creation of the album. The album is credited for the input of some of the members in writing some of the songs. In the case of the title song, there were inputs from Yuki, Hyui, and Tomoya in terms of writing lyrics for that song. There are also inputs from Yuki and Tomoya for another song called “Hypeman”. However, this is an indication that these members have been slowly integrated into the creation process.
In terms of lyricism, the work defies narrative expectations. The lyrics are not meant to build up a story or delve into complex emotions. Rather, they act as an extension of the rhythm idea. Repetition becomes important here, but not for the purpose of creating redundancy. Repetitions of phrases are used for their ability to stabilize the dance and underscore the circularity of the rhythm. This makes the use of language in itself kinetic, as opposed to just having a separate meaning.

In terms of visuals, “Mmchk” remains true to this philosophy in that it presents a world of motion and contrasts. This style of performance is referred to as surreal, wherein the distinction between self and community is blurred. As opposed to the individual member being portrayed as a solitary figure, each is presented as a component within the entire ensemble. Moreover, the way in which the video is filmed mimics the manner in which the performance is choreographed.
Such cohesiveness between sound, visuals, and performance makes up for one of the most significant aspects of the project.
All of the elements work in service of a cohesive whole. No additional layering of symbolism is added to the project; neither any other concept comes into play. In light of the fact that this is one of the debut works of the group, such cohesiveness offers an ideal starting point for further developments.
But it is exactly the cohesiveness of the idea behind “Mmchk” that creates specific limitations. Since there is an emphasis on harmony rather than diversity, it is impossible to introduce variations and contrasts into the album’s composition. There is no experimentation with different genres or even tones in the project, as it maintains a certain energy from start to finish.
The use of repetition only serves to make this issue more pronounced. In the realm of the live show, repetition aids in increasing memorability and physical presence. Out of that realm, when one listens passively, repetition can detract from progression. Such a contradiction, however, is present throughout NEXZ’s work, yet “Mmchk” seems to take such contradictions to another level entirely.

Without the inclusion of a powerful narrative element, too, this album’s reception is inevitably affected. It has no intention of evoking emotion, as it lacks a range thereof. Its intensity and focus remains constant and never wavers. This will make the album less appealing for some, who look to music as an emotional escape. Still, it strengthens their reputation as performers before anything else.
In the wider world of K-pop music, the song "Mmchk" can be understood in the context of the shift towards performance as the core of artistic identity.
Increasingly, K-pop has developed into a multimedia experience, whereby dance, stage presentation, and visual elements are considered just as important as the songs themselves. In this regard, NEXZ is fully committed to this process, not attempting to change but to embrace it. The use of an English translation for the name of the song demonstrates that the artists are aware of the context in which the development of K-pop music is taking place. It is a practical step towards accessibility and has no impact whatsoever on the song's music.
Strategically, the meaning behind "Mmchk" lies in bridging the initial burst of debut success with more consistent development of the career as a whole. This strategy is emphasized through such events as the showcase in Seoul, and then in Taipei, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. Thus, the group does not attempt to change its image, but simply seeks further expansion of it.

The album release takes place in a number of versions, which include Umm..., Chk!, and NEXZOO versions, and represents a typical practice in the K pop market. This fact also serves as proof that collectible forms of music releases matter for the promotion process.
In essence, "Mmchk" is not concerned with growth, but definition. The track makes no effort to impress; it only exists to establish itself. It achieves this through a kind of discipline, which is not always celebrated in a scene that thrives on showmanship. Rather than being shape shifters, NEXZ position themselves as architects, building their identity brick by brick, beat by beat.
In such a method, there is an implicit assurance. There is an awareness that lasting success in K-pop does not simply lie in a process of endless transformation, but in the creation of a solid base from which to draw. While "Mmchk" might not make a dramatic impact, it creates something far more enduring: a base.
