MEOVV’s ‘BITE NOW’ EP refines identity through controlled intensity and cohesion

BITE NOW, the second extended play (EP) by MEOVV, comes off less as a declaration of intent than as the fruition of a thought process begun in the early days of their debut period and now crystallized into something more specific and tangible. Released on June 1, 2026 at 6 PM KST via THEBLACKLABEL, the release comes after several months' wait following the success of their first single, Burning Up, and marks out their growing profile in modern K-Pop with no attempt made to overhaul the language of their art form in the process. It merely compresses it and lets it come into greater proximity to the skin.



This alignment is present in the way the members (Sooin, Gawon, Anna, Narin, and Ella) approach the EP's recording. While taking part in aspects of the concept's creation as well as in some writing is not a sign of rebellion against industry norms, it represents nonetheless the beginning of a recalibration of the authorship of MEOVV's songs, even though, in the context of the early releases of MEOVV, BITE NOW is more concerned with defining their identity rather than altering it in any fundamental manner.


THEBLACKLABEL has described their new EP as one of a leap. This leap is less of a display than a transition, which is reflected both in their marketing and in the recordings themselves. Throughout, there is a definite sense of restraint rather than excess. Instead, what is emphasized is the idea of expansion; it is not about moving away, but opening up the space of action itself.


In the visual world constructed by BITE NOW, tension plays an ongoing role, and this tension is not easily dispelled. On one hand, elegance and sophistication are not allowed to take on any purely decorative quality, while instinct is not permitted to devolve into chaos. Through teasers and their video of DDI RO RI, the members of THEBLACKLABEL can be seen occupying spaces that appear refined on the surface, but have deeper levels of distortion running underneath. Light seems almost too orderly, almost too disciplined, and beneath all this refinement, there is always a rawness.



The very opening track sets this dualism in motion via a sound. Inherently constructed upon an idea taken from Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor, DDI RO RI uses history within a modern context without resorting to the use of the latter as merely decoration. The effect here does not have any relation to nostalgia; rather, it creates a tension between the gravity of the classic style and the rhythm of a contemporary approach, which does not sacrifice the former’s rigor.


Throughout the EP, the production decisions maintain an idea of control and focus. The music does not allow any full openings toward its catharsis but proceeds along the lines of pressure, allowing the tracks to retain their coherence via compression. When a melodic space emerges, it still seems restrained, as if the arrangement was consciously aware of its boundaries all along.


From a vocal standpoint, however, MEOVV seems to act less like competing presences demanding individual recognition and more like a single surface, changing only the quality of its texture. One gets a clear sense of how crucial collective phrasing is, of an articulation which favors blending rather than distinguishing individual presence. It makes a world of difference. Identities are formed not through the separation of voices, but through their alignment – much like the EP as a whole, which gains clarity through cohesion, rather than contrast.


As it happens, the writing throughout BITE NOW fits nicely into a pattern discernible throughout MEOVV’s previous work, which privileges forceful statements over narrative exposition. Language is applied very carefully here, with phrases circling around certain concepts of identity and control without spelling them out directly. In DDI RO RI, the lyrics take on the role of structure more than anything else, providing the internal rhythm of the song rather than commentary about its progress. There is no narration of change; the lyrics just occupy its space.


But at other, less frenetic times like “In My Hands” and “Favorite Song,” the album offers a new form of listening. In contrast to some of the earlier songs on the EP, which are somewhat alienating in their sheer intensity, these tracks seem to ease off the throttle slightly, without ever losing touch with what is going on here. The emotionality that can be heard is not really a matter of exposure so much as modulation—without ever sacrificing the integrity of the whole structure.



“Revenge” ends the EP by leaving the issues open-ended rather than solved. There is no attempt to wrap everything up; instead, there is just a sense of leaving things hanging. In line with the EP’s place within the BITE NOW project, everything here is presented as being in progress rather than concluded.


Overall, the EP maintains a unique place in the current K-Pop scene, as defined by the pace and nature of the music industry rather than any specific artistic vision. The form, duration, and imagery of the EP all point to its nature as a product designed for the modern environment, where songs can exist both as sound and image as well as units of attention. In this context, BITE NOW clearly defines itself. It seeks neither to break beyond its limits nor to perfect them.


The use of the Bach melody within DDI RO RI also demonstrates a trend common to K-Pop production, involving taking older material and putting it in a new setting through recontextualization. However, in this instance, the inclusion seems not so much a quotation as a kind of internal absorption. Rather than standing apart from the song as an observation, the allusion becomes a part of its beat.


Instead, what remains in the aftermath of the EP is a continual feeling of containment. The record consistently seems to hover at the point of containment rather than release. Such an effect may either be seen as a restriction or an intention depending on how close the listener is to its aesthetic intentions. Regardless of the way such a description might be understood, it serves as a better description of the listening experience than any particular lyric or melody.



With respect to the overall development of MEOVV, BITE NOW can be said to represent a period of articulation. Through repetition of the same decisions made within the band rather than any drastic changes, the band’s identity is established in its early stages of development. In this process of establishing their identity, MEOVV is working towards a consistent signature style.


In the end, the EP refrains from falling into the trap of storytelling itself about its importance. The EP never proclaims its arrival or its aftereffects. Rather, it dwells within a smaller scope, one that conveys meaning by means of form rather than by telling us what the significance is. And it is this scope that gives BITE NOW its unique significance, its emphasis not on pronouncement but on persistence.
