hrtz.wav’s The First Wave signals a bold new direction for K-Pop bands

It has been two weeks since the release of The First Wave, and the album no longer feels like a potential statement. It has become one. On April 8, 2026, at 6 p.m. KST, five musicians known as hrtz.wav have joined the K-pop scene with a rare offer. They present themselves as an artistic concept that focuses on tangible sounds, raw instrumentals, and honest storytelling that reflects their generation.

Their debut mini album was published under the record label Kakao Entertainment. The band did not create a trendy product; they wanted to create something to start a trend. The group rejects the idea of producing music through perfect digital sound waves. Instead, they choose to focus on the organic nature of music created using live instrumental performances.

They were produced through a very common method in today’s K-pop industry; that is through the show known as Steal Heart Club, made by Mnet. What sets hrtz.wav apart is the quick way in which they have managed to break free of any form of restriction imposed by this genre. The five members are; Keiten (guitar), Hagiwa (drums), Dane (bass), Riaan (vocals) and Youn Youngjun (keyboards); all ranked number one for their instrument.

Their multi-nationality (consisting of three Koreans and two Japanese) is not just another gimmick, but an integral part of their music. This is shown through tonality, arrangement and even languages included in the lyrics. Furthermore, it is reflected in the definition of what they feel constitutes a band ; not just conformity, but frequency convergence.

The name alone conveys such an intention. "hrtz" is a term referring to both the heart rate and frequencies. ".wav" stands for sound waves of high quality. Together, they imply the devotion to emotional integrity and the unwillingness to compromise during the production process.

"THE FIRST WAVE" begins with a song called "Dream." It is the very embodiment of radiant energy. At the same time, its subject matter (the first awakenings of affection) can be considered fragile. The music itself is based on an ascending melodic line, which resembles the inner processes of fantasizing about something not quite tangible. Everything seems uncertain and emotional at the same time.

"NINETEEN", the title track, is the emotional and conceptual axis of "THE FIRST WAVE". With its melodic lines performed by synths, guitar riffs, and a strong rhythmical component, it is built around its thematic idea. In South Korea, becoming nineteen years old means reaching the legal age of adulthood. Therefore, "hrtz.wav" depicts the emotional state associated with such an important transition in life.

The song celebrates a kind of everlasting love, which endures regardless of separation and change. Neither does it wallow in either nostalgic longing nor stagnant misery; instead, it occupies a position of equal joy and sorrow at once. Five members have cooperated in creating the lyrics to achieve intimacy in songwriting. Moreover, adding Japanese lyrics makes an allusion to their shared experience, which cannot be confined to one culture alone.

In “Highlight,” there appears a sense of bitterness. Informed by a contemporary rock style, the song takes a step aside from focusing on a rupture and concentrates on what comes after – on self-rebuilding that happens after experiencing loss. While pain is still recognized in the song, it is no longer its main focus; rather, it serves as a means to find resolution.

Finally, “I AM SO FINE” builds upon juxtapositions. Its energetic instrumental work with catchy melodies seems to celebrate happiness and satisfaction in life. On the other hand, however, the lyrics describe an emotional state of numbness and denial in response to absence.

“Outta My Mind” is the collaboration between Riaan and Dane, and in this song, the group embraces the fragility of love for the very first time. The song’s mood is dreamy and reflects the feelings of insecurity, hesitancy, and impulsiveness that characterize the first experiences of love.

The last track, titled “Close To Me,” concludes the album on a personal but simultaneously expansive note. This song reflects the thrill of diving into passion headfirst and trusting oneself to another person because of the shared feelings. The song’s instrumentation combines alternative sounds with contemporary ones, giving rise to a feeling of something coming next. Metaphorically, this track becomes an introduction to a greater story that the band will be telling to its audience.

But beyond its six songs, The First Wave also carries a more profound message in its lyrics, which tell the story of how five people learn to live together, to listen to each other, and to grow together. But for that to be achieved, there must be some conflict as well. In fact, all members of the band have recognized that there is a need to adjust to each other’s behaviors, characters, and viewpoints. It is precisely through that conflict that harmony is born. As a band on stage, this balance is immediately noticeable. Their ability to dominate the stage with their presence and collective energy during Steal Heart Club quickly caught the attention of listeners.

Moreover, performing as a band for the first time and covering such a song as “A Youth of One Day” is yet another example of their skillfulness in doing so. There are particular components that make up its unique identity. The most obvious is Hagiwa, the masked drummer. Through masking his true identity, age, and voice, he subscribes to a theory of thinking that goes far beyond just anonymity. As someone who comes from a "Hagiwa World," he injects an almost mythic quality into the relatively realistic group.

The inclusion of Kakao Entertainment, of course, offers all the necessary structure needed to make such a project possible. But such a structure should not detract from the idea that this is still very much a work in progress. Such a conflict, in fact, may end up defining hrtz.wav.

From the very beginning, there has been a sense of growth in their career. Their involvement in the original soundtrack of the MBC drama called 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife, which is set to premiere on April 10th, is another indication of their interest in telling more stories. Their presence at the KCON JAPAN 2026 event in Makuhari Messe from May 8th to 10th marks their entrance into a wider global arena.

In the end, the fans themselves will determine the future direction of the band. In just several weeks, hrtz.wav gained their own loyal audience who was already gathering around them during Steal Heart Club. This is the audience that apparently feels the same experience inside these tracks.

The musical world we live in is a globalized one where the lines between aesthetics have become more blurred, but hrtz.wav does not lay claim to reinventing anything. Rather, it introduces a new way of feeling, one that focuses on the details, the spaces, the flaws that define our experiences.

After two weeks, The First Wave has moved beyond the realm of an initial success story into something else entirely ; a statement of purpose, a wave that hints at its potential future flow.
